The History of Sports

It is impossible to pinpoint exactly when Sports first began. But it is evident that children have enjoyed playing games with balls for as long as they have been around. Ancient civilizations have been playing ball games for centuries, including the Chinese, Aztecs, and Greeks. These ball games were either contests or noncompetitive ritual performances, and we can see them in the artwork of prehistoric times. In fact, a 2nd-century Greek physician recommended playing ball games for good health.

As a result, sports have played a major role in the development of American society. Through their tremendous popularity, they are a catalyst for social and racial integration. It is no wonder that Sports have served as a social glue throughout the ages. In the early United States, the founding fathers stressed the benefits of exercise, and encouraged running and swimming. Presidents of the 20th century even promoted physical activity. As a result, Sports are important in a democracy.

While there are many types of sports, all of them involve some form of physical activity. Generally, sports involve competing against each other to demonstrate strength, speed, agility, and endurance. Athletes are called athletes. There are many different types of sports, and they vary in both intensity and complexity. Many involve individuals or teams, and some are played indoors or outdoors. There is something for everyone, and many people enjoy participating in sports with their friends.
